This weekend marked the exciting launch of Buzz in the City, Chelmsfordâs first-ever bee-themed sculpture trail â and what a buzz it created! Kicking off on 5 July, the trail features 30 giant bee sculptures and 25 mini bees across the cityâs streets, parks, and community spaces, running through 9 September 2025.
Sponsored by local organisations and supporting Farleigh Hospice, the trail combines art, exploration and outdoor discovery. Launch day saw the city come alive with visitors exploring the new trail, enjoying live music, and celebrating the start of a summer packed with creativity and community spirit.
Art, Community & Heart
Each giant bee sculpture is uniquely designed by professional artists from across the UK, with bright, bold, nature-inspired and heritage-themed designs. Alongside them, 25 mini bees have been lovingly painted by local schools, community groups and care homes â a true celebration of Chelmsfordâs creativity and local pride.
Explore the Trail
The trail guides visitors from Chelmsford High Street, through Moulsham Street, past Central Park and up to Anglia Ruskin University, with plenty to discover along the way. For families wanting a shorter stroll, there are three mini routes too, easily accessible through the Buzz in the City app or printed maps.
Visitors can scan bee codes, unlock discounts, and claim prizes while supporting local shops and cafes â a great way to boost footfall and encourage people to spend time exploring the city.
Why It Matters
At Making Trails, we believe sculpture trails do so much more than decorate streets. They connect communities, inspire people to get out and explore, and create valuable opportunities for artists, businesses and good causes alike.
Buzz in the City is doing exactly that:
Supporting Farleigh Hospice through map sales, sponsorship and the final sculpture auction.
Encouraging families and visitors to explore Chelmsford differently.
Driving extra footfall to local shops, cafes and attractions.
Sparking smiles and new connections, one bee at a time.
